Our Jubilee: A Record and a Review; the Story of the Lewisham High Road Literary Society, 1857-1908.
eBookA history of the Lewisham High Road Literary Society from 1857 to 1908.
The Literary Society was associated with the Lewisham High Road Congregational Church. It represented the intellectual side of the Church’s life. Founded in 1857, it was initially known as ‘The Young Men’s Christian Association belonging to St. David’s Congregational Church, Lewisham High Road.’ Over its first 50 years it operated under several names whilst remaining committed to the same objects.
Literature took first place in the Society. In addition to providing lectures, the Society hosted debates, poetry and prose recitals, dramatic performances and musical meetings. The Society also concerned itself with a wide range of topics such as politics, poverty, religion and science. Local and municipal matters, especially public questions affecting the welfare of the people, were given great attention. Many of the topical and progressive movements of the day were frequently debated, such as British colonialism, temperance and women’s rights. A small lending library was maintained. The Society also put on entertainments and raised money for Church projects as well as charitable causes like orphanages, overseas missionary work, and the Salvation Army. Visits were organised to kindred societies. Instruction was provided on practical subjects such as first aid and gardening. Artistic efforts included the Society’s Camera Club.
At the outset in 1857, the Society excluded women from membership, but welcomed women as visitors. Then, in 1866, the meetings were made “open to gentlemen only.” In 1882, however, this was overturned and from then on women were included as full members.
The author of this book, Alfred H. Miles, was an active member of the Society for over forty years. It was first printed for private publication in 1908. This special edition is published by Lewisham Press, 2021. This book is particularly of interest to social historians and local historians of Lewisham and South East London.
