G. B. Kenna

Facts & Figures of the Belfast Pogrom, 1920-1922

eBook

A first-hand account of the violence in Belfast from 1920 to 1922. The author characterises this violence as an anti-National pogrom perpetrated, predominantly, by a minority of Protestants and Government forces, with the majority of the victims being Roman Catholics.

The book begins with some historical context, before carefully detailing events in Belfast from 1920-22 in chronological order. Written in easily understood language for a wide audience, this careful study provides facts and figures and individual stories. It includes a list of the nearly 500 persons killed thus far.

First published in 1922, this special edition of Facts & Figures of the Belfast Pogrom 1920 – 1922 is published by Lewisham Press, 2020. The object of the book was to inform the public and call attention to the violence. The author was critical of press coverage to date and seeking an impartial Government tribunal. For historians of Belfast and Ireland, it is a very important primary source.

It has been reported that G. B. Kenna was a pseudonym of Father John Hassan (1875 -1939), a Roman Catholic priest who, was Administrator of St. Mary’s Parish in Belfast in 1920, then spent two years in Dublin supporting refugees from Belfast, before returning to the North in 1922.
