George William Johnson: Civil Servant and Social Worker

A biography of George William Johnson (1857-1926), civil servant and social worker, written by his sister Alice and including letters from many family, friends, and colleagues.

Johnson worked as a civil servant in the Colonial Office from 1881 to 1917. During much of this time he was based in the Eastern Department. He was particularly concerned with issues of labour exploitation, drug traffic, and prostitution in the Eastern Colonies.

Johnson was a committed supporter of women’s suffrage and several other issues of inequality throughout his life. He took part in many social and political activities. Alongside his wife, Lucy, he was especially committed to their work in connection with campaigning for the abolition of stage regulation of prostitution. He was closely involved with Josephine Butler, the Association for Moral and Social Hygiene and the International Abolitionist Federation.

First printed for private circulation in 1927. This special edition is published by Lewisham Press, 2021. This book is particularly of interest to historians of prostitution and trafficking.
